Time to future-proof the charity lottery sector
- Lotterynews
The Lotteries of Novamedia/Postcode Lottery Group are active in five European countries. Since being founded over 32 years ago, we have raised €12.5 billion for good causes. With the crucial role of charities in tackling pressing national and global challenges only set to grow, now is the time to futureproof the charity lottery sector and super-charge the growth of this vital, unrestricted funding stream. However, charity lotteries are still facing severe limits imposed on it by law.
Complementary to state lotteries
Recently it was yet again proven that charity lottery fundraising is complementary to National Lottery fundraising. A charity lottery sector consistently increases the scale of the overall lottery market in those countries which operate one, generating a larger base for contributions to good causes.
Removing restrictions on charity lottery fundraising is a practical solution to free up more for good causes. Especially in these times where many of our supported charities are lending whatever support they can in regions that are ravaged by war, economic and political crisis, violence and natural disasters.
Opportunities
Within Novamedia/Postcode Lottery Group our focus is constantly on innovation and opportunities to keep the total of six lotteries at home and abroad as attractive as possible for players, with the highest possible proceeds for charity in the long-term. In doing so, the lotteries focus, within the possibilities offered by the licence for charity lotteries, on aspects like attractive gaming opportunities and campaigns and appealing events for winners and players.
Online gaming unfit for fundraising
Novamedia, as the owner and developer of the Postcode Lottery format, obtained a licence for online gaming activities with Novamedia Gaming BV in 2022 in the Netherlands. This part of the sector is subject to discussion and is subsequently and rightfully so getting more tightly regulated, which makes it unfit to raise funds. Novamedia has therefore decided to continue exploring opportunities for innovation from within its safe lotteries themselves and, for the time being, to make no further investment in the opportunities that online gaming could offer in the Netherlands. The organisation will also continue to focus on opportunities for new lottery licences to raise more funds for good causes in new markets.
Record amount raised in 2022
Novamedia/Postcode Lottery Group was able to donate a record amount of €854 million to hundreds of charities and community projects from its 2022 lottery ticket sales.
