The Postcode Lottery Group honours the life and contribution of Prof. Dr, Rita Süssmuth, Chair of the Advisory Board of the Deutsche Postcode Lotterie, who has died, aged 88.

Rita Süssmuth
From the founding of the Postcode Lottery in Germany in 2016, Rita Süssmuth served as Chair of our Advisory Board and later as its Honorary President.
Together with her fellow board members, she helped decide on the allocation of funding at the social lottery for important projects and charitable organisations that shared her values.
Strengthening civic engagement, fostering social cohesion, and protecting our planet were central to Rita Süssmuth in all the offices she held and united her invaluable work in support of the mission of the Postcode Lottery.
Katja Diemer, Head of Charities at the Postcode Lottery in Germany, said: “Without Rita Süssmuth as Chair and Honorary President of our Advisory Board, the Postcode Lottery would not have developed into the major social lottery and important pillar of Germany’s funding landscape that it is today. Without her foresight and commitment, we would not have been able to further develop our unique concept and broad funding portfolio in this form."
Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, Chair of the Advisory Board of the Postcode Lottery in Germany, paid tribute to her long-standing companion, saying: “With her clear-eyed view of the challenges facing our society, and with her energy to not accept injustices but to take action, act sustainably, and persist, Rita Süssmuth motivated and inspired us. She played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Postcode Lottery in Germany.”
Together, we remember a remarkable politician and decision-maker, a fighter and source of encouragement, to whom we as a social lottery owe an immense debt of gratitude.
We will keep her extraordinary commitment to supporting important and courageous projects and charitable organisations in lasting memory.
