Deutsche Postcode Lotterie

Germany became the fourth postcode lottery country when Deutsche Postcode Lotterie was launched in October 2016.

Every ticket sold helps make a positive impact by supporting a wide range of German initiatives and community organisations. These efforts focus on education, child and senior wellbeing, human rights, and nature protection.

Money raised in each individual federal state helps fund good causes working in that state. A list of supported projects can be found at our projects page.

The concept is simple and familiar. A player's ticket is created from their postcode, which consists of the post number (Postleitzahl) representing their postal area and two letters assigned to their street. To make it unique, each ticket has a unique three-digit number. Players have the chance to win prizes every day and cash prizes are paid directly into players’ bank accounts.

The Monthly Prize gives players the chance to win a share of €2 million. Every Saturday, a prize of €10,000 is awarded to players in a lucky postcode. With five draws each month, prizes are won every day.

Key success factors

When Deutsche Postcode Lotterie launched in 2016, it introduced a unique concept to Germany: a social lottery in which players can win prizes together and support good causes around the corner, at the same time.

An independent advisory board (Beirat), led by the former Federal Minister of Justice, Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, decides on the distribution of funding.

Charities

Deutsche Postcode Lotterie exists to raise funds for, and increase awareness of, charities and good causes across Germany. Thirty percent of the raised money will go to local and regional projects of social benefit across Germany – focussing on education, social cohesion, human rights, animal welfare and nature conservation.
