Celebrations are being held to mark the 100th birthday of the British naturalist, Sir David Attenborough. They mark an extraordinary life dedicated to bringing the natural world closer – and inspiring action to protect it.
Over more than seven decades, his groundbreaking documentaries have taken audiences from the depths of the oceans to the most remote corners of the planet. In doing so, he has transformed global understanding of nature and highlighted urgent challenges including climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.
In recognition of his impact, Sir David was named a Postcode Lottery Hero in 2020. His work continues to resonate with Postcode Lottery players, whose support provides vital, long-term and flexible funding for environmental charities working to protect wildlife and ecosystems worldwide.
Postcode Lottery players also supported the world premiere of his landmark documentary Ocean in 2025. The screening, held in London, was attended by His Majesty King Charles III.
Sigrid van Aken, CEO of Postcode Lottery Group, said: "Sir David Attenborough has shaped how we see and value the natural world. His storytelling has inspired generations to care for our planet and to take action to protect it.
“As he celebrates his 100th birthday, we honour his extraordinary achievements and the lasting impact he continues to have around the world. On behalf of our players, we wish him a very happy birthday."
Organisations supported by Postcode Lottery players include WWF UK, The Wildlife Trusts, Zoological Society of London, Blue Marine Foundation and Fauna & Flora, where Sir David has long served as Vice President.
Kristian Teleki, CEO of Fauna & Flora, said: “Few people have done more to make the world fall in love with nature than Sir David Attenborough.
“For generations of conservationists, including so many of us at Fauna & Flora, it was his documentaries that first lit the spark. As our vice-president for almost half a century, he has been far more than a figurehead. With his voice, his passion, and his unflinching honesty about what we stand to lose, Sir David has moved millions to care and to act.”
“On his birthday, we celebrate not just an extraordinary life but also the countless lives that are richer because of it.”
Craig Bennet, CEO of The Wildlife Trusts, said: "For generations, Sir David Attenborough has inspired people to value and protect the natural world, revealing its beauty, complexity and fragility with clarity and care.
"Through his storytelling and lifelong commitment to nature, he has given wildlife a powerful voice. As President Emeritus of The Wildlife Trusts, his influence continues to guide and strengthen our mission to protect and restore wildlife and wild places for the future, in the UK and beyond.”
