Making a difference in Norway

Norsk Postkodlotteri has raised 20 million euros for charity since the start

Charities, people, and communities in Norway have all been winning since the Norsk Postkodlotteri (Norwegian Postcode Lottery) started in 2018. In just five years, players of the Norwegian Postcode Lottery have raised over 201 million Norwegian kroner (20 million euros) for two of the country’s major charities – WWF Verdens naturfond and SOS-barnebyer (SOS Children’s Villages).

The Postcode Lottery in Norway is the youngest of the Postcode Lotteries and has consistently grown since its launch. It’s also part of something bigger – the Postcode Lottery Group. Postcode Lotteries have been helping raise funds for charity for over thirty years, with lotteries also operating in the Netherlands, Sweden, Great Britain and Germany. Together, millions of players have raised €12.5 billion for thousands of charities, big and small.

The tried and tested Postcode Lottery formula of neighbours winning together while raising vital funding for charity, has seen the Norsk Postkodlotteri in Norway achieve steady year-on-year growth.

Tens of thousands of people have celebrated a win with the Norwegian Postcode Lottery since it launched, with tens of thousands of people winning last year alone and sharing a total of 83.3 million kroner (8,3 million euros) in prizes between them.

Lottery win dream home
It was Christmas Eve in Heimdal, central Norway, when Morten decided to sign up and play the Postcode Lottery. Just a few weeks later he was in tears as he pulled a 2 million kroner cheque from a gold envelope as a Postcode Lottery winner. His 7080 TX Heimdal postcode was the winning postcode in January, winning Morten and two of his neighbours the biggest share of the massive 10 million kroner prize.

Morten, his fiancée, Elisabeth, and their young family, faced having to move out of their rented house after plans were announced that it was to be demolished. The young couple immediately knew how they’d spend their winnings and planned to put the money towards buying their first home together.

Supporting families and nature
It’s not just players that win with the Postcode Lottery, charities win too. Last year saw a milestone reached, with over 100 million kroner raised in total for charity since the lottery started in 2018, an equivalent of 10 million euros.

This money means SOS-barnebyer can reach even more children than before and give them the care they need, keep them in education and learning and ensure they have safe homes with their families.

Players are also enabling WWF to continue its important animal and habitat conservation work, helping protect our environment and letting nature thrive.

Support for WWF to preserve nature

By July this year, players had raised nearly 23 million kroner (2.2 million euros) for WWF. This vital funding is helping WWF tackle plastic pollution and protect marine life and oceans, as well as supporting the conservation efforts of endangered species such as the mountain gorilla in Uganda.

Secretary general of the WWF World Nature Fund, Karoline Andaur: “The funds we get from the Postcode Lottery are an important source of income that strengthens our work to preserve nature, both here at home and out in the world.”
